This sculpture is made of New York-based Venezuelan immigrants’ clothing that Cassandra Mayela collected, starting in April 2021. The clothing has been cut and woven into a tapestry to illustrate how fragments ultimately comprise a whole. Using non-verbal storytelling this piece explores identity through tactile memory and collective nostalgia.
Maps of Displacement -New York is the first piece of an ongoing sculptural study. Following this exhibition, Cassandra plans to continue the project in other areas that have been significant to the Venezuelan exodus.
